Storyline for Pinocchio

Pinocchio, the second Disney animated film ever created and a remake of the original 1940 film, tells the tale of a puppet who is given life.

A lonely old craftsman named Geppetto misses his late son and creates a puppet that looks like him. He gives him the name Pinocchio and, just before going to sleep, makes a wish on a star.

He had no idea, though, that his dream will come true. The little cottage soon receives a visit from a blue fairy who brings Pinocchio to life.

Pinocchio, however, aspires to be a genuine boy! And to do that, he must demonstrate his courage, honesty, and selflessness.

In the course of the film, Pinocchio encounters good and evil characters and embarks on thrilling and dangerous journeys.

So how does the film conclude? Does Pinocchio fulfil his wish to grow up to be a real boy? Let's investigate!

How does Stromboli fare?

The puppet Pinocchio gets tricked by Honest John the cunning fox early on in the story.

A puppeteer with a travelling theatre, Stromboli, purchases Pinocchio from Honest John.

Pinocchio quickly escapes with Jiminy Cricket's assistance when Stromboli mistreats him and imprisons him in a cage.

Pinocchio encounters Fabiana, a member of Stromboli's company, and Sabina, one of her puppets, at the conclusion of the movie.

Pinocchio is informed by Fabiana that Stromboli has been detained for his exploitative actions. Fabiana and the others now manage the theatre on their own.

How does Pinocchio lose the ears and tail of his donkey?

Pinocchio is offered a position on their new puppet show by Fabiana. Pinocchio is seduced since he adores fame and attention.

He declines, though, and decides to go rescue his father. The ears and tail of Pinocchio's donkey vanish as a result of this act of selflessness!

How do Monstro and the gang escape Pinocchio?

Both Pinocchio and Geppetto are sucked up by the enormous sea monster known as Monstro while travelling to meet his father on the open sea.

Monstro sneezes Pinocchio and Geppetto out due to the fire and smoke. However, they are still in danger as Monstro starts to pursue them.

The enormous Monstro is left to crash into the mountainside as Pinocchio quickly manoeuvres the ragged boat carrying their entire company into the entrance of a little cove.

Is Geppetto still alive?

Geppetto appears to be unconcious when the boat crashes into the cove and onto the shore. When Pinocchio tries to wake him up, he doesn't budge.

Pinocchio is upset and starts to cry. Geppetto wakes up feeling as good as ever after shedding a tear.

How does Pinocchio end?

Geppetto takes a moment after waking up to recall everything that has happened. He is gushing with praise for Pinocchio and compliments him on his courage, honesty, and altruism.

He acknowledges that, despite having earlier led Pinocchio to believe he desired something different, Geppetto actually desires Pinocchio in his current state. He appreciates him for who he is and is proud of him.

Pinocchio declares his love for Geppetto and the two give each other a tender hug.

Geppetto, Figaro the cat, Cleo the fish, and Pinocchio are all seen leaving the cave as the film comes to a close.

They go in the direction of a glistening blue light, eager to return home and resume their happy family life.

Becomes Pinocchio a genuine boy?

Jiminy Cricket wraps up his narration as the newfound family exits the movie together in the final moments. He claims that there are many tales about Pinocchio, some of which suggest that he grows up to be a genuine boy made of flesh and bone.

Jiminy is unsure if that has ever occurred, though. But he claims it doesn’t matter. What counts is that Pinocchio was courageous, sincere, and selfless, making him as real a boy as any!

We do witness Pinocchio's wooden arms and legs change to flesh as Jiminy continues to narrate and he leaves with Gepetto. What little of his cheek is visible appears rounder and softer.

So, the movie does make a hint that he grows into a real boy. However, the film emphasises that what matters most is on the inside, not the outside, through Jiminy's narration.

Is the conclusion different from the first film?

Yes, the 1940 movie's ending had a significantly different twist. Pinocchio, not Geppetto, is the one who perishes while attempting to lead the others to the safety of the cove.

Geppetto, Cleo, Figaro, and Jiminy lament the dead puppet at home. However, the fairy's voice can be heard declaring that Pinocchio achieved his objective of being sincere, courageous, and selfless. 

The dead puppet becomes a genuine boy thanks to her wizardry. The movie finishes with Geppetto and the others jubilantly rejoicing at their home.
