Netflix's Angela's Christmas Wish

An Enjoyable Follow-Up To The 2018 Short Film

As a follow-up to 2018's Angela's Christmas, Angela's Christmas Wish is a sweet short animated movie that conveys a message about the importance of family and the joys of the holiday season in a straightforward but powerful way.
Angela's Christmas Wish

Similar to its predecessor, Christmas Wish builds on this one idea and tells a wonderful tale that both kids and adults will love.

In Ireland in 1913, Angela is humming and playing with her toys as our story opens. However, when the family packs up their belongings and says goodbye to their Father by the dock, the humming quickly fades to quiet.

They don't know when they will see him again because he is currently employed in Australia. Cut two years forward, and we're back on Christmas Eve once more. But this time, everything is totally different.

Memories of Christmases past

With "Dada" no longer around and the kids clinging to memories of Christmases past, Angela sets out with the single objective of raising the funds necessary to go to Australia. Angela is still committed to finding a method to get her Father back, especially with brother Pat by her side.

It's a straightforward narrative hook, yet it gives a story drenched in misery a genuine sense of childlike wonder and innocence. But the main point here is not to be depressed.

The message here, like Angela's Christmas, is one of joy and family as Angela and the others work to bring their Father back.

This short film explores these concepts and manages to cap it off with a pretty trite but heartwarming conclusion that serves as a gentle reminder of what Christmas is really all about.

The animation is very well-rendered, with somewhat improved big eyes and expressive faces from what we saw in 2018.

While none of the aforementioned images are particularly noteworthy or ground-breaking, they do have a consistent colour scheme that works well with the music to draw you into the narrative.

This is especially true of the sweeping panoramas of Ireland and the blanket of snow covering the landscape.

Angela's Christmas Wish is a fantastic short film even though it isn't nearly as amazing as the first one. Given its brief length, it is a no-brainer to watch with the kids.
